Telecom Norway: Huawei will continue to participate in 5G network construction!

On December 13, Telenor said on the 13th that it will continue to use equipment from Chinese supplier Huawei in the construction of 5G networks, while adding Sweden’s Ericsson as a 5G supplier.

Telenor is one of the major telecom operators in the Nordic region. It also operates in Myanmar, Pakistan, Thailand, Malaysia and other countries, with more than 100 million users. The company has been working with Huawei for more than 10 years.

At a press conference on the 13th, Telenor President and CEO Sigwe Blake said that the company will transform the network in the next 4 to 5 years, and in the process, Telenor will continue to use its existing supplier Huawei. equipment to maintain the 4G network and upgrade the network in some areas to 5G.

Some media reports say Telenor will exclude Huawei from its 5G buildout. Blake said there was no reason for Telenor to delay cooperation with Huawei, and he looked forward to continuing cooperation with Huawei. “We are very satisfied with our cooperation with Huawei,” he told a news conference.

“If an operator chooses a supplier from a country or region with which Norway does not have security cooperation, the supplier’s equipment must not exceed Half of the base stations in Norway.”

Telenor explained that the reason for keeping Huawei and Ericsson as two suppliers is that users’ demand for data traffic increases year by year, and the entire network must be modernized. The retrofit will coincide with the development of 5G and will take about 4 to 5 years.

When asked if Huawei 5G equipment is needed to meet the above needs, Fourberg replied: “In order to meet customer needs, the answer is yes. Given that this process takes 4 to 5 years, we need to ensure that all customers Had a good experience.”

Meanwhile, Telenor also announced that it will add Ericsson as its 5G equipment supplier. “As the first 5G mobile network operator in Scandinavia, Telenor will increase the pace of 5G network deployment in 2020,” said Boler Fourberg, CEO of Telenor’s Norwegian subsidiary.
